history

The Swiss SPAR Group was founded in 1989. However, the roots of the family company go back to 1761, when the predecessors of the family company founded a trading company in St. Gallen . They ran a specialty shop and offered coffee, tea, chocolates, spices, imported goods and other everyday items. As a supplement to the grocery store, the business began selling fruits and vegetables in 1944. In 1967 the sale of other fresh products was added.

The foundation stone for the Swiss SPAR Group was laid in 1985 with the new building at the St. Gallen-Winkeln site in the municipality of Gossau. In 1989, Juan M. Leuthold signed the SPAR franchise agreement with SPAR International. In 2000 the previous family company was converted into a holding company. Today this comprises the three operating companies SPAR Handels AG , TopCC AG and SPAR Management AG as well as two real estate companies.

A strike from June 2 to 13, 2013 in the SPAR branch in Baden-Dättwil attracted attention . The strikers blocked the SPAR petrol station shop for eleven days , together with the UNIA union . During this time, SPAR had tried to get into the store with other employees and to run the shop again. The strikers prevented this. You were given notice without notice on June 12, 2013 .

In 2016, the family sold 60% (with an option to the additional 40% of the capital) to the Irish savings operator BWG (with SPAR stores in Ireland and England), which in turn was acquired by the South African SPAR Group in 2014. SPAR Group operates stores in South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia in 1935.

On February 13, 2018, the SPAR Friends customer benefit card was launched. To reduce food waste , leftover food is marketed through the Too Good To Go app .
