history

Established in 1853

Today's Sparkasse Witten started its business operations on August 1, 1853 as Sparkasse zu Witten under the guarantee of the city of Witten, after the establishment stretched over nine years from the first impulse in 1844 to the actual opening in 1853. This delay was mainly due to the fact that the savings banks were run on a voluntary basis in the early years. Witten had considerable difficulties in finding a legal expert who should volunteer as one of three administrators. A rendant was also only found in May 1852, so that in 1853 it was finally possible to start operations in a small office behind a distillery on today's Ruhrstrasse.

Until the First World War

Ten years after it was founded, the Wittener Sparkasse already had savings investments of 725,000 talers. Of this, 681,000 thalers were borrowed - 88% of them for mortgages. Of the 1963 savers, 34% were factory, miners and ironworkers, 8% servants and 5% journeymen. In 1864 the first paid full-time employee relationship was established, and in 1868 a controller was added to the rendition. At the turn of the century, four people were already working full-time for the Sparkasse.

With the increasing volume of business and with changes in the office of the Rendanten, the Sparkasse changed its domicile several times until it found its first own building in the administration building Marktstrasse No. 1 from 1885 (until 1909). In 1903 the Sparkasse Witten celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1909 new business premises were moved into on the west side of Ruhrstrasse, which were used until 1967 after renovations and extensions.

As early as 1910, the Sparkasse Witten was able to grant its customers the right to use checks and to carry out giro transfers. In 1929 there were already two Sparkasse branches in Witten.

Between 1914 and 1945

In 1914, with the beginning of the First World War , difficult years began for Sparkasse Witten as well. Withdrawals exceeded deposits for two years. The Sparkasse becomes a gold collection point - all citizens have to hand over their gold supplies. In 1919, with the onset of inflation, deposits rose from 84.4 million marks (1919) to 174,234,000,000 million marks (1923). In 1929 Annen, Bommern, Düren and Stockum were incorporated. Thus the population of Witten rose from 45,000 to 73,000. The municipal savings banks were merged. As a result of the unification, savings deposits grew from RM 8 to 13 million and mortgage loans from RM 3.3 to 5.9 million. 1931 was the banking crisis in Germany. The avalanche-like withdrawal of deposits at banks and savings banks could only be handled with the help of the newly established acceptance and guarantee bank. As a result, the first law on credit was passed in 1934.

After the Second World War

After the Second World War , Sparkasse Witten started a program in 1949 for those looking to save money, called "Reconstruction Savings". Between 1948 and 1952 alone, 3,471 houses were built or rebuilt in Witten.

Another important step for Sparkasse Witten was the branch policy, which led to eleven further branches between 1953 and 1971. In 1953, the Sparkasse Witten celebrated its centenary, and at the same time the new building of the cash desk at Ruhrstrasse 48. The triumphant advance of current accounts begins. In 1960 the cast steelworks introduced cashless wage payments. In 1961 the savings deposits of the Sparkasse exceeded the 100 million DM mark. Modern punch card machines with connected electronic computers and tape punches were introduced as early as 1963. The net profit of Sparkasse Witten exceeded the one million DM mark in 1963 - 10% of this was distributed to the city of Witten.

From 1967 until today

From 1970, the housing construction financing is carried out together with the Landesbausparkasse. In 1973 the eurocheque card became established as a means of payment.

1976 will be a decisive year for Witten: with the municipal reorganization, Witten becomes part of the Ennepe-Ruhr district. With the incorporation of Herbede, Sparkasse Witten received three new branches - and since then has consisted of a total of 16 branches. The first bank statement printer went into operation in 1981, and in 1982 the first cash dispenser at the main office in Ruhrstrasse.

After the electronic banking of the Sparkasse Witten was intensively expanded, there has been a rapid increase in online banking since 1998.
