Speed Niggs was a German indie rock band that was founded in Detmold in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1989 .

history

The Speed Niggs' first album, Boston Beigel Yeah! , was released just a few months after the band was founded in autumn 1989 and was record of the month in the then influential music magazine Spex . The album sounds puristic like an unfinished demo recording and is musically in the tradition of classical guitar trios like the Jimi Hendrix Experience or American songwriters like Neil Young . At the end of the year, the trio was voted Newcomer of the Year by Spex readers .

The second album, released in 1990, continues the tradition of the debut. The record opens with the Neil Young song Mr Soul . Evan Dando from the Lemonheads has a guest appearance in Paint it sweet . The piece Toys in the Deep Freeze also appeared on the sampler Geräusche for the 90s compiled by Alfred Hilsberg , an overview of the German music scene at the time. During this time the Speed Niggs played numerous concerts all over Germany.

The third record 667 - Right between the Dicks from 1991 sounds completely different stylistically and is more reminiscent of hard rock bands like ZZ Top than American indie rock . After numerous line-up changes, the formation broke up in 1992.

The band Sharon Stoned , which hit the scene in 1995, was something of a revival for the Speed Niggs with two members of the original band. The out-of-print debut album was also released in 1995 with numerous bonus tracks on CD, including cover versions of the AC / DC song She's got Balls and Neil Young's Lotta Love .

classification

In the second half of the 1980s, numerous American guitar bands such as the Lemonheads , Dinosaur Jr. and the Pixies caused a sensation. They came mainly from Boston and combined classic melodic song structures with hard punk guitars. The Speed Niggs were among the first German bands of this style.
