The Rheinau blocking point (Army designation No. 651) was a border fortification of Border Brigade 6 of the Swiss Army . It is considered a military historical monument of national importance.

history

The Celts settled 2500 years ago on the Au peninsula in Rheinau ZH . The loop of the Rhine provided an inexpensive way of protecting the settlement with a wall (Celtic wall). During the Second World War , the Rhine became a fortified border. Shortly before the World War, several infantry bunkers were built on the left bank of the Rhine.

The extensive barrier in the Rheinau- Dachsen - Marthalen triangle comprises around 50 systems. The landing site near the Rhine peninsula in Rheinau, which was favorable for the attacker, was fortified in 1937 with a tank obstacle and three Lmg stands. The Ebersberg artillery factory ⊙ was able to give the blocking point direct fire protection. From 1938 onwards, numerous machine-gun bunkers and shelters were built between Rheinau and Dachsen. The Rheinau barrier was supplemented in 1955 with an infantry work (anti-tank bunker A 5500) to protect the newly built Rheinau river power station .

In the 1960s, numerous crew shelters (Kubu), anti-tank garages and additional road barricades were built to prevent a mechanized advance from Rheinau towards Andelfingen.

The Border Brigade 6 was disbanded in 1994. Most of the blocking points were taken out of service with the army reform in 1995 , the rest around 2004. The Military History Society of the Canton of Zurich owns several fortress structures in the Zurich Unterland , which are maintained and shown on guided tours.

Blocking point Andelfingen

Andelfingen ZH was one of the few crossing points on the natural obstacle of the Thur . The Thurbrücke Andelfingen , first mentioned in 1324 , became the scene of armed conflicts in 1799 during the Second Coalition War . In the second half of the 19th century , prepared explosive charges were installed in important Rhine bridges as the first outposts of the Gotthard fortress . Due to the acute threat from Nazi Germany , the first permanent combat facilities were built in the canton of Zurich: The Rhine crossings were reinforced with tank barricades from 1935 and the first infantry bunkers from 1936.

During the Second World War, further systems were built at the locking points in the Andelfingen district : Andelfingen (Army designation No. 636), Alten (No. 643), Dorf ZH (No. 646), Ellikon am Rhein . These were massively reinforced during the Cold War . Ellikon am Rhein is considered a military monument of regional importance.

Lock point Schaffhausen

Hemishofen railway bridge, explosive object M0733

A chain with twelve bunkers and barriers was planned for the strategically exposed canton of Schaffhausen and the city of Schaffhausen in 1935. After the two large bunkers of the Herblingen SH barrier had been built, the north side of the canton of Schaffhausen had to be given up for defense for tactical and financial reasons.

The line of defense of the Schaffhausen / Rhine barrier (barrier Fluringen-Feuerthalen-Schaffhausen ZH, army designation lock No. 649) ran on the southern side of the Rhine, opposite the city of Schaffhausen, in the Zurich communities of Feuerthalen and Flurlingen . The important bridges were reinforced with barricades, explosive objects and large infantry works. The "Güetli" bunker (A 5477) was built as a prototype of all Rhine bunkers.

Further along the Rhine to Eschenz (Fänebach) (section boundary of Border Brigade 6 to Border Brigade 7 ) followed the lock points Langwiesen (Feuerthalen) (No. 641), Schaarenwald (No. 634), Diessenhofen , Hinterfeld (No. 615), Rheinklingen (No. . 613/615), Hemishofen (No. 609), Wagenhausen TG (No. 605) and Stein am Rhein. Bunkers were built in this room from 1936. In the 1960s, these were supplemented with modern standard buildings (ASU, VOBAG, etc.).

The Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein blocking points are considered to be military-historical monuments of national importance, those of Herblingen and Hemishofen of regional importance. The "Rheinkastell" association founded in 1994 has set up a nature trail in the Schaarenwald. In addition to the facilities from the Second World War, the moat and earth wall of the bridgehead built by Austrian troops in 1799 can be seen.
