occupation

Mirror on the wall (original title: Miroir mon amour ) is a French film drama by the director Siegrid Alnoy from 2012. The plot focuses on the fairy tale Snow White by the Brothers Grimm and includes only a few actors. In addition to Snow White and the Prince , only her parents ( Queen and King ) and his parents ( Queen Aurore and King Jacob ) appear. Supporting actors are the hunter and the gardener . The backdrops reflect a regal ambience with castles and spacious estates. The film plays with erotic fantasies without staging them in detail or vulgarly.

action

The prince loves Snow White. She describes the hatred of her (biological) mother and her jealousy for Snow White's beauty. Although Snow White makes excuses to meet, the two protagonists travel together with the Prince's parents, Queen Aurore and King Jacob, to see Snow White's parents. The reunion with her father is warm - her mother is one-sidedly cool. Snow White is sickly and rejects a physical relationship with the prince. The Queen, Snow White's mother, does the opposite. She has a sexual relationship with the hunter. She has a relationship with King Jacob that remains in the dark.

As the plot progresses, the contradiction between Snow White's accusations against her mother and her actually maternal behavior becomes apparent. Contrary to the classic motif, Snow White's jealousy of her mother is staged instead. She tries to seduce the hunter in the forest, which he refuses. Then Snow White flees to 7 forest workers. She tries to charm the men and in the end it is she who speaks the words: mirror, mirror on the wall. Who's the fairest of them all? The prince brings her back to her parents' home.

At the end of the film, Snow White returns the prince's affection.

The diverse network of relationships is often only sketched or hinted at. Its interpretation is up to the beholder's eye.

Scenic details

  • At the beginning of the film, the fairy tale theme is staged. The hunter leads the child Snow White into the forest, spares her and kills an animal instead. A jump in time follows and the prince carries the now adult Snow White out of the forest. The common storyline of the fairy tale (recording with dwarfs etc.) is not discussed any further.
  • On the way to see Snow White's parents, they pass a group of men in brightly colored clothes in the forest - an allusion to the dwarfs of the classic fairy tale. This encounter is not commented on.
  • Parents and children sift together.
  • When the queen stands in front of a large mirror, it breaks. There is no interpretation of this overlay.
  • The content of the scenes with Snow White and the gardener is not explained in detail.

criticism

TV Spielfilm comments on "The Evil Queen as a sadomasochistic fan, Snow White as a spoiled, oedipal bitch - director Siegrid Alnoy ... alienates Grimm's fairy tales into gloomy, image-loving erotic theater for adults ...".

In the opinion of the Berliner Zeitung, “the young princess is not as innocent and suffering as one might think. Rather, Snow White wants ... to finally be an adult and her conflict with her mother turns out to be a consequence of this very wish. "
