The spike Art Magazine is an Austrian magazine for international contemporary art , which is published quarterly in German and English. The place of publication is Vienna .

history

Spike was founded in 2004 by Amer Abbas and the artist Rita Vitorelli in Vienna. 2004–2008 it was published by the Austrian Sportmagazin Verlag in cooperation with the Wiener Kunstverein New Art Club . Since the takeover of Sportmagazin Verlag by Styria Media Group in 2009, Spike has been published as an independent magazine by Rita Vitorelli and Susanna Hoffmann-Ostenhof in Vienna. Since 2012 Spike has another editorial office in Berlin . The Hamburg art director Christoph Steinegger was responsible for the layout and design until 2014 ; at the end of 2014, the graphic studio Bureau Mirko Borsche in Munich redesigned it . The focus of the international art magazine is in German-speaking and Central European regions. Curatorial projects such as the art fair / exhibition Fruits, Flowers and Clouds are also among her activities.

content

In terms of content, “the magazine impresses with its technical density. The conception of the contributions is not geared too much towards quota, the intelligent combination of different perspectives offers an overview and insight ”. The first issues included posters by Heimo Zobernig , Manfred Pernice and Hans Schabus . After that, art editions by artists such as Gerwald Rockenschaub , Liam Gillick , Cory Arcangel and others were produced especially for Spike Art Quarterly . Since 2012, posters have been added to the entire magazine edition again, a small edition of which is available signed and numbered - by Tom Burr , Roe Ethridge , Rirkrit Tiravanija , Gelitin and Brian Calvin .

Art fair Fruits, Flowers and Clouds

In 2011 the art fair Fruits, Flowers and Clouds was held for the first time in the Museum of Applied Arts (Vienna) . Only individual presentations by selected artists who had been invited to the fair with their galleries were shown. Fruits, Flowers and Clouds is a hybrid of a curated exhibition and an art fair. A bar with an evening program, performances, book presentations and a concert are integrated in the newly developed concept.
