The catholic hospital church Heilig Geist is a monument in Aichach .

history

The Heilig-Geist-Spital in Aichach was founded around 1354 and at that time was probably at the gates of the city. It was probably moved to its current location under Duke Ludwig the Bearded . A chapel is mentioned in 1359. The current building probably dates from around 1420. It was changed in 1473. In 1634 the church was partially destroyed in a fire and restored in 1642/43. In 1734 the tower was redesigned and in 1789 heightened according to plans by Jakob Schellhorn , and instead of the pointed helmet, it was crowned with an onion hood.

Restorations on the sacred building took place in 1906 (outside) and 1914/16 (inside), the latter with baroque frescoes uncovered. Further restorations followed in 1937, 1950, 1966 and 1995/96.

Building description

Wappenstein 1418

The Spitalkirche is a two-aisled hall church with a groined vault of three bays. The facade with volute gable and the slender, richly structured tower dominates the Aichach town square. On the eastern round windows, which are placed on the otherwise usual altar extensions, there are glass paintings from 1917 by Franz Xaver Zettler depicting St. George fighting the dragon (left) and the Virgin Mary in the halo (right).

Coat of arms stone

A coat of arms stone for Duke Ludwig the Bearded from 1418 is attached to the facade. The inscription plaque contains information about the city fortifications. A similar coat of arms stone can be found in St. Jakob in Friedberg .

Furnishing

The middle rococo altar

The frescoes from 1789 are by Johann Georg Unglerth and show the Annunciation and the Baptism of Christ in the eastern part , allegorical representations in the western part and Duke Ludwig the Bearded on the north wall. On the east wall there are three altars around 1680. The reredos of the side altars show the martyrdom of St. Margaret on the left and the feast of Pentecost on the right . The figures on the sides represent Saint Sebastian and Wolfgang on the left and Anna selbdritt and Ursula on the right . The small altar contains a carved group with the coronation of Mary . The stone pulpit was built around 1640.
