The Spitzberg , called Mont Sujet in French , is a 1382 meter high ridge in the Swiss Jura . The highest point is on the soil of the Bernese municipality of Plateau de Diesse north of Lake Biel , around 7 km west of the city of Biel . The French term subject is probably a deformed diminutive form of frankoprovenzalischen search, which as much as "small peak, round mountain" means.

In structural geological terms, the Spitzberg forms an anticline of the Jura folds . This anticline is about 8 km long and a maximum of 2 km wide and, according to the general fold structure of the Jura in this region, is oriented towards the southwest-northeast. It is in front of the main anticline of the Chasseral chain to the south. The upcoming competent rock layers of the upper Jurassic period ( Malm ) are only accessible in a few places. The Spitzberg is bounded in the south by the high plateau of the Tessenberg , in the east by the Orvin basin and in the north by the syncline of Les Prés-d'Orvin or Prés Vaillons, which forms a valley furrow between the Spitzberg and the ridge of the Chasseral chain .

The steep flanks of the Spitzberg are covered with dense forest. In the ridge area, which extends over a length of 4 km, there are extensive Jura high pastures with mighty spruce trees , which either stand individually or in groups. The lonely ridge is suitable for hiking. A sculpture trail leads from Les Prés-d'Orvin to Lamboing. On the north-eastern slope of the mountain near Les Prés-d'Orvin, alpine skiing can be practiced in winter; there are two ski lifts here. The construction of a wind power plant was planned on the mountain, but the project will not be pursued further for the time being.

meteorite

In 2016, a stone meteorite of type H5 weighing a good 66 grams was found on the Spitzberg . It was discovered by chance during a systematic search for fragments of the Twannberg meteorite . The new find was officially named Mont Sujet .
