Sport Huambo e Benfica , usually just called Benfica Huambo , is a sports club from the Angolan city of Huambo . He is known for his soccer team, but also for his basketball and roller hockey departments, especially in the youth sector.

History and present

The club was founded under the name Sport Nova Lisboa e Benfica on September 29, 1931, as a subsidiary of the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon ( Portuguese : Sport Lisboa e Benfica ) in Nova Lisboa, the Portuguese place name of today's Huambo.

In 1972 he became the Angolan champion . After Angola's independence from Portugal in 1975, the association was named Estrela Vermelha do Huambo (English: Red Star of Huambo) as part of the anti-colonial efforts of the new socialist government. It was later renamed Mambroa , before it was given its current name, which goes back to its original name, after the 1989 season . Mambroa remained in use as a nickname in addition to its official title.

After a few seasons in the 1980s in Girabola, the highest Angolan league, the club played for the last time in the 1997 season in Girabola and then relegated to the second division.

In the course of the economic boom since the end of the Angolan civil war (1975-2002), Benfica Huambo has also been able to improve and expand its facilities. In 2006, for example, he again had a grass pitch and a multifunctional sports hall ( pavilhão gimno-desportivo ), and the club also owns the Hotel Ruacaná. The expectations that the popular club could become a major player in Angolan sport have not yet been met. However, the club's management is sticking to its goal of becoming an important factor again in the region (as of 2014).
