The Sportpark Oberwerth (formerly Sportanlage Oberwerth ) is a sports facility in Koblenz that includes a stadium, a sports hall, a fencing hall, Jahn-Platz, Südplatz, Karl-Adam-Platz and a fenced-in part of the southern area. It is located on Jupp-Gauchel-Straße in the Oberwerth district . To the north is the junction of the south bridge on the left bank of the Rhine and to the east is the Koblenz-Oberwerth waterworks .

history

The first sports facility on the Oberwerth goes back to a foundation of the Secret Commerce Councilor Julius Stephan Wegeler . In 1882 he bequeathed the city a sum of 130,000 marks to build a playground and sports field. The building department of the city of Koblenz worked out the first plans for the entire facility according to the specifications of the sports department in 1970 and 1971. Karl-Adam-Platz belongs to the Oberwerth sports school, where the courses can carry out their training.

Stadion

A first stadium on the Oberwerth was built in 1920 by American occupation troops. The “American Stadium” was operated by the US Army until 1929 . As part of a job creation program of the Nazis , it was 1934-1935, designed by Friedrich Neumann expanded. On June 15, 1935, Mayor Otto Wittgen inaugurated it as the “Hermann-Göring-Kampfbahn”. At the time, it had an audience capacity of about 30,000. After the Second World War it was briefly used in 1945 by the French occupying army as the “Stade de Gaulle”. The home games of TuS Neuendorf (name from 1982: TuS Koblenz) have been taking place in the Oberwerth stadium since 1946.

Records

The Oberwerth stadium was the venue for the International Evening Sports Festival in Koblenz between 1960 and 1992. The following four world records were set here:

  1. Steve Ovett in the 1500 meter run on August 27, 1980 in 3: 31.34 min
  2. Steve Ovett on the mile on August 26, 1981 in 3: 48.04 min
  3. Edwin Moses in the 400 meter hurdles on August 31, 1983 in 47.02 s (This is the second fastest time ever run on the route and was one of the oldest running world records ever; up to Kevin Young's 46.78 on August 6 August 1992).
  4. The "Santa Monica Track Club" in the 4 × 200 meter relay on August 23, 1989 in 1: 39.38 min.

Plans to build a sports hall on the Oberwerth go back to 1969. Construction finally began on March 1, 1990 under the then Lord Mayor Willi Hört . On January 18, 1992, the opening ceremony of the largest sports and event hall in Rhineland-Palatinate took place with a large sports gala. Depending on the type of event, the 3400 m² hall can accommodate up to 5000 people. The hall serves u. a. the fencing club Königsbacher SC Koblenz as a training and competition venue. On January 1st, 2013 the hall was renamed “Conlog Arena”. From January 1, 2018, the hall will be called the CGM Arena .

Events

Since its start in 1993, the Hallenmasters of the Koblenz Schools (HAMA) has been held annually on the Oberwerth, in which, in addition to the Koblenz grammar schools, the Lahnsteiner, Bendorfer, Neuwieder (Rhein-Wied), Montabaurer, Höhr-Grenzhäuser and Bopparder grammar school take part. Every year on the first weekend in November, WHU Euromasters , the largest sports festival for European business schools, is held in the Oberwerth sports hall . Football tournaments are often held there, among other things.
