The sports university is a university with a focus on sports and sports science . In addition, the subject of sports science can also be studied at sports science faculties of larger universities .

Sports universities in Europe

Germany

The German University for Physical Education was founded in 1920 by Carl Diem in Berlin as the world's first sports university . From 1950 to 1990 the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) existed in Leipzig , one of the world's best-known sports universities , which was re-established in 1993 as a faculty of the University of Leipzig . The only sports university that exists in Germany today is the German Sports University in Cologne .

Sports universities in Poland are called Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego (AWF). In addition to the Polish, they all have an English name. AWF Warsaw was founded in Poland in 1929.

The Eidgenössische Hochschule für Sport Magglingen (formerly: "Eidgenössische Turn- und Sportschule Magglingen (ETS)") is the only sports university in Switzerland , based in Magglingen . It is also a high performance center for top athletes, a training center for the leaders of Jugend + Sport and a center for sports medicine.
