The building of the former municipal trade school was built in the years 1899/1900 and today houses the Johannes Brahms Music School . It has been registered with the number A465 in the list of monuments of the city of Detmold , Lippe district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) since November 21, 1994 .

history

In 1846, the Detmold trade association founded a voluntary trade school. The opening took place on January 11, 1846, 128 students - journeymen and apprentices - were registered. There was still no building of its own; lessons took place in the rooms of the elementary school on Schülerstrasse. In accordance with the requirements of the North German Confederation , the school was converted into a municipal compulsory trade school in 1873 . The new school building on Woldemarstrasse was built between 1899 and 1900 according to the plans of the architect Priester and moved into in 1901. The first full-time teacher was employed from 1903. The upper floor was rented to the carpenter's college until 1914 . On July 31, 1919, the second Lippische Continuing Education Act was passed, which provided for compulsory schooling up to the age of 18 years. Therefore, in 1920 it was converted into a state vocational school. Until 1938, the city of Detmold and the state of Lippe were the sponsors of the school, in that year the sponsorship changed to the district of Detmold with state supervision. In the war years 1944/45 there was an interruption in school operations, the school served as a reserve hospital. The steadily growing number of students since 1941 made it necessary to move to other buildings. For the year 1952 3200 pupils, 36 full-time and 12 part-time teachers are given. From 1954 on, a number of new buildings were built at another location, to which the vocational school gradually moved. The successors of the municipal trade school are today the Dietrich Bonhoeffer vocational college and the Felix Fechenbach vocational college .

Since 1979 the building has been the seat of the municipal Johannes Brahms Music School, which has existed since 1959. In 2009 the music school was extensively renovated.

architecture

The school building is a three-storey solid stone building with a basement, and from the first floor upwards from red bricks at the time of the road. The hip roofs are covered with red hollow interlocking tiles. Below the gutter, a cornice on consoles runs around the entire building .

On the eaves side facing Woldemarstraße there is a central arched portal with a skylight. Columns with decorated spiers stand on consoles on both sides. The oak door comes from the construction period. Above the door three narrow window axes, below the edge of the roof there is a coat of arms of the city of Detmold made of sandstone. Symmetrical to the left and right of the entrance area are two risalits with a dwelling and a facing gable . In each of the gables there are two sandstone reliefs with symbols of craftsmen. There were originally two spiers on each of the gables, but one has been missing for a long time. Decorative wall anchors between the first and second floors as well as in the dwelling houses . Segmented arched windows made of ashlar on the first floor, rectangular windows with skylights on the first floor, coupled segmented arched skylights on the second floor . The four-axle side wings each have three dormers .

The more simply designed rear side consists entirely of unplastered quarry stone masonry with nine window axes. The middle three of them in a protruding transept with a hipped roof, which in turn is loosened up by a single-axis central projecting with a stepped gable . The stairwell in the rear part of the building still has an iron banister from the construction period.
