St-Didier (Avignon)
The former collegiate church of Saint-Didier ( St. Desiderius ) is an important Gothic building in the old town of Avignon ( France ). The church is named after St. Desiderius von Langres .
history
Saint-Didier was built from 1356 as a church of the collegiate monastery of the same name and was consecrated on September 20, 1359. It replaced an older building that no longer met the prestige of the pope's residence city . Cardinal Bertrand de Déaulx († 1355) had designated part of his estate for the new building. The lead architect was Jacques Alasaud , who previously played a key role in the construction of the Avignon Papal Palace . Both buildings is the flächig- quadric together and decoration poor style.
architecture
Saint-Didier has the shape of a pilaster church , which was unusual for its time . The main room is spanned by a ribbed vault . The place of aisles represented chapel spaces on both sides of the six longhouse - yokes . A polygonal choir with the high altar forms the east end . The building, which appears compact and sparse from the outside, shows decorative elements only on the bell storey and helmet of the tower attached to the south of the choir.
Furnishing
From the original church furnishings , parts of wall paintings with depictions of the Passion have recently been exposed. The pulpit shows the late Gothic flamboyant style . A sandstone altarpiece with Christ carrying the cross and numerous accompanying figures in half-relief was created by Francesco Laurana around 1480 and is one of the earliest works of Renaissance art in France.
organ
The organ was built in 1891 by the organ builder François Mader in a neo-Gothic case. Between 2005 and 2006 the instrument was restored by the organ builder Jean Deloye. The instrument has 32 registers on three manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are mechanical.
