Saint-Sauveur church

The Catholic Church St-Sauveur in Fos-sur-Mer , a commune in the French department of Bouches-du-Rhône in the region Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur , was built in the second half of the 11th century. It has been a protected cultural monument ( Monument historique ) since 1964 .

history

The church, made of yellowish stone, consecrated to the Savior (French Sauveur) rises up on the rock inside the fortress wall. At this point, a church building for the 10th century has been handed down, which stood in the middle of a cemetery.

architecture

The current church from the 11th century with a square apse , partly carved into the limestone rock, and a two-aisled nave with four bays is covered by a barrel vault . A square bell tower with a four-sided roof dominates the church.
