Saint-Thyrse Chapel at Robion

The St-Thyrse chapel near the hamlet of Robion in the south of the French commune of Castellane in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century erected. In 1944 the church was recognized as a protected cultural monument ( Monument historique ).

history

The chapel and former parish church of Robion, consecrated to St. Thyrsos , rises on a small rocky plateau outside the hamlet, which is why it is assumed that it could originally have been the church of a monastery or priory . The enclosed churchyard adjoins the choir head . In 1942 the church building was subjected to a thorough restoration.

description

The single-nave east-facing church with a semicircular apse was originally vaulted with a pointed barrel, which is reminiscent of the remnants of the arch. In the 17th century this was replaced by a simple wooden ceiling. The apse has a stone hemisphere. The special feature of the church is the arcature of the apse walls and the north and west walls of the nave. In the apse it rests on flat pillars and in the nave the small round arches fall alternately on a pillar and on a console . The consoles and pillars are decorated with superimposed sawtooth bands and with geometric motifs. Consoles with birds' heads adorned at the corners were torn out and stolen. Many stonemason's marks can be seen on the herringbone masonry . The southern wall of the nave, probably renewed in the 17th century, has simple masonry without arcatures. In the north, the first floor of the tower forms a small chapel.

tower

The church tower on an irregularly square floor plan connects to the north side without its walls entering into a connection with the church walls. It is built from rubble stones and its edges are made of larger house stones . On the upper floors there are wide pilaster strips with two round arches that rest on a console in the middle. In the east there are two twin windows with curved walls .
