St. Anne's Chapel

The St. Anne's Chapel is an under Abbot John Ernst was built in 1592 Chapel . It is located on Kreisstraße 7574, on a hill between Oberstetten and Steinhausen an der Rottum , at the junction to Sankt-Anna-Hof in the Biberach district in Upper Swabia .

History and description of the building

Abbot Johannes Ernst (1585–1593) was buried in 1594 in the chapel at the foot of the altar. In 1750 a farmhouse was added to the chapel on the west side. This is a reminder that the site was originally a hermitage where a hermit lived until the abolition of the monastery in 1803.

The community of Steinhausen an der Rottum is connected to the St. Anna Chapel by a way of the cross consisting of fourteen wayside shrines . At the southern exit of Ochsenhausen, the chapel with the rectory and small farm is visible from afar. The chapel is a small 17.50 meter long and 7.30 meter wide hall building with a late Gothic three-eighth closure . The resulting nave has a barrel vault with stitch caps and four arched windows on each side. The vaulted choir is lit by two pointed arches and one round skylight on the east side.

Imperial prelate Benedikt Denzel (1737–1767) had the chapel redesigned in Baroque style in 1753 . Major restorations were carried out on the chapel in 1860, 1913, 1960 and 1991 .

Furnishing

Inside on the north side is the Steinhauser Madonna, probably created around 1470 . It is attributed to an unknown Ulm artist from the Multscher School and was originally located in the St. Georg Abbey Church. A kicking Jesus child holds the veil of the mother and in his right hand a miniature of Maria Steinbach's Mother of Sorrows . There are three rococo altars of unknown origin. The late baroque ceiling painting by an unknown master shows the passage to the Temple of Mary .

During the restoration in 1991, late Gothic exterior cuboids were found. Inside, Gothic wall paintings, dated from 1515 to 1520, were uncovered: Apostle crosses, the plague patron Rochus , Sebastian , Maria Magdalena and St. George , a kneeling monk in front of Christ crucified with a Latin inscription and the four evangelists .

The bell on the roof turret comes from the Biberach bell founder Daniel Schmelz. It depicts a crucifixion group with a harvest scene and a Madonna with child. The baby Jesus smashes the Satan serpent with his cross staff. SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTUM - the name of the Lord be praised - reads the majusc inscription .
