The St. Anne's Church in Krakow is a Roman Catholic Church and is an important example of baroque church architecture in Poland . The church is located in downtown Kraków on ulica św. Anny 11.

history

The church was first mentioned in 1381 in the deed of foundation of Sulislaus I. Nawoja from Grodziec . In 1407 the church was completely destroyed by a major fire, but in the same year it was rebuilt in the Gothic style by the Polish king Władysław II Jagiełło . It was also King Władysław II. Jagiełło who ensured a close connection between this church and the Jagiellonian University by establishing the university's patronage for the St. Anne parish church in 1418. In 1428 the presbytery was rebuilt and expanded . On October 27, 1535 the church was raised to the rank of collegiate church .

In 1689 the Gothic church was demolished because it was unable to cope with the influx of the faithful in view of the growing veneration of St. John of Krakow who was installed here. In the years from 1689 to 1703, the baroque building was erected in its current form based on the design of the Dutchman Tylman van Gameren , which was modeled on the Roman church of Sant'Andrea della Valle in Rome. Baldassare Fontana, the creator of the sculptural decoration, and the brothers Carlo and Innocente Monti from Mendrisio , and Karl Dankwart from Nysa , whose work were the frescoes, contributed to the design of the church . The picture of St. Anne in the high altar comes from Jerzy Siemiginowski-Eleuter, the court painter to King John III. Sobieski . The series of pictures from the life of St. Anne adorning the choir stalls was carried out by Szymon Czechowicz in the 18th century . In the right part of the transept is the altar with the sarcophagus of St. John Cantius .
