Bartoszyce, Church of St. John Evangelist

The Church of John the Evangelist and Our Lady of Czestochowa ( Polish Kościół św. Jana Ewangelisty i Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Bartoszyce in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It was a Protestant town church in Bartenstein in East Prussia until 1945 .

It is to be distinguished from the neighboring church of St. John the Baptist, which was St. John's Church until 1945 .

history

The church was completed in 1332 as a simple hall construction, this year is recorded in a keystone in the choir. The first written mention of it is from 1345. Between 1360 and 1380 it was converted into a three-aisled basilica . In 1487 the church was consecrated again after renovations.

In 1525, after the introduction of the Reformation, it became Protestant, after a first Protestant preacher had previously been denied activity. Further renovations took place in 1642/43.

During the Second World War , the building was severely damaged by shell fire. From 1945 to 1958 it was extensively restored and in 1959 handed over to the Roman Catholic Church as a parish church.

architecture

The church is a three-nave brick Gothic style basilica built between 1360 and 1380. To the south are chapels from around 1400 and a baptistery from 1642, next to it a sacristy.

On the north and south side there are portals from 1360/80, in the north with figures of St. Margaret and St. Catherine made of cut clay. The tower was completed in 1732 after several modifications.

Inside, a porch was built around 1400 and in the west a vestibule with a star vault and large entrance portal at the end of the 15th century. The vaults inside are from before 1487, the sacrament niche in the southeast from 1643.

Furnishing

The altarpiece from 1611 was transferred here from the German Church in Tilsit, a marble low relief from 1858 by August Wittig came from the castle chapel in Dönhofstädt . The original Bartenstein altar from 1650 was almost completely destroyed in 1945, remains are in the Lidzbark castle and in the museum in Olsztyn (Allenstein). A large crucifix from around 1500 as a local work under the influence of Bernt Notkes is also preserved. It originally stood on the triumphal beam.

Medieval terracotta reliefs depicting saints can be found on the side walls . Two confessionals from 1638 and part of the baptismal bowl are also from the German Church in Tilsit. Other preserved parts of the original Bartensteiner furnishings can be found in Heilsberg Castle .

The organ was rebuilt around 1968, in place of the destroyed baroque organ from 1650, which was created by the Elbingen organ builder Johann Werner and whose prospect was considered to be one of the most beautiful in East Prussia.
