The St. John's Church

The St. Johannes Church is a Protestant church in Cologne-Deutz .

Building history

Since all Protestant believers in the area on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Cologne had to visit the Friedenskirche in Mülheim , Robert Ferdinand Cremer's design for a church building in the then independent Deutz was created in the mid-19th century . Construction began in 1859, and St. John's Church was consecrated on Reformation Day in 1861. With the population growth, the initially solitary structure was soon integrated into the Tempelstrasse street. It stands out with an eight-sided tower and portal that protrude from the three-part western bar. The church was built by Eduard Kramer in a mix of styles with classicistic and neo-Romanesque elements in the style of Friedrich August Stüler and Ernst Friedrich Zwirner according to the Eisenach regulation .

During the Second World War , the church burned down completely on the night of May 31 to June 1, 1942. In 1943 an explosive bomb caused further damage. The reconstruction took place in stages: in 1952 the curved organ loft was built in, the organ was added in 1963 and in 1970 the tower at its original height.

The organ from 1963 comes from Willi Peter's Cologne workshop in neighboring Mülheim . It has 27 registers , two manuals and a pedal with mechanical action . In 2003 it was overhauled by the Karl Schuke Berlin organ building workshop. There was also a positive built in 1973 by Gebr. Oberlinger Orgelbau , which was also completely overhauled by Schuke in 2003.
