The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Secundus is a church building in Schwei , municipality of Stadland , district of Wesermarsch .

Building history

The church is a brick hall church built in 1615, which closes polygonally in the east and to which a simple bell tower was added in 1617 in the west. Two coat of arms stones refer to Oldenburg rulers: Count Anton Günther and Christian V of Denmark (1695). The current shape of the windows goes back to a reduction in size from 1819. The church is known for several carvings by Ludwig Münstermann .

The wooden flat ceiling was painted around 1700 with tough acanthus tendrils. The balustrades of the galleries in the north and west show painted scenes from the Bible. One prieche is provided with the coat of arms of Anton Günther († 1667) and his wife.

More important are the pieces of equipment of Ludwig Münstermann and his workshop.

The altarpiece, commissioned in 1635 and dated 1638, has only survived in fragments . Moses and John the Baptist wear a canopy (later changed or renewed) and thus form a frame over the three scenes of the predella with the Annunciation , Adoration of the Shepherds and circumcision . The middle picture, a representation of the Last Supper (similar to Rodenkirchen ) staged as a stage space, was removed in 1856, remains are in the Landesmuseum Oldenburg .

The manneristly elongated figures in the pulpit are particularly sculptural . As a representative of the Old Covenant , Moses carries the pulpit on his head in a moving sitting position. On its six sides are distributed, partly as niche figures, partly sitting on the lower ledge, Christ as Salvator mundi , the four evangelists , King David with his harp and King Solomon in gestural movements. The sound cover is adorned with the dove of the Holy Spirit , the pelican allegory and vanitas symbols. Archival sources and restoration findings show that the pulpit, built in 1618, was initially unmounted for 20 years . In contrast to the sometimes unreliable overpainting of other works by Münstermann, an exemplary restoration has given an authentic picture of the original color and surface quality of the condition from 1637.

In 1623, Ludwig Münstermann finally gave the cup-shaped baptismal font from 1575 a lid that hung freely from the ceiling. In and on its richly openwork, dome-shaped dome, the apostles gather as busts or statuettes, while the baptism of Jesus takes place in the crown .
