Parish church

The Catholic parish church of St. Agatha is a listed church building in Agathaberg , a district of Wipperfürth in the Oberbergisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The three - aisled neo - Gothic quarry stone hall was built in 1894 under the supervision of H. Renard. The west tower from 1878 is in front. The cross-rib vaulted choir with a yoke with a three-sided end comes from the votive chapel from 1477. The vault is supported by buttresses . Wall paintings from the 16th century can be seen in the niches under the windows.

The construction of the church goes back to a vow in honor of St. Agatha . In 1465, Wipperfürth was once again burned down in a town fire. The pastor Volmar and the citizens vowed the festival and fasting in honor of St. Agatha. A pilgrimage to her burial site in Catania was promised. A few years later the church was released from this vow by the church authorities; a chapel was to be built near Dierdorf to replace this. Until 1912 a procession went to this chapel every year on Trinity Sunday. At the end of the 19th century the chapel became too small for the growing community. That is why a nave was added to the Gothic chapel in 1894 . The community was raised to a parish in 1912 .
