The Filialkirche Sankt Athanasius is a former pilgrimage church in the municipality of Berg im Drautal and belongs to the parish of the same name . The church stands in an open field near the Drava .

history

The church, first mentioned in 1443, was consecrated in 1485 by the Bishop of Caorle, St. Nonnosus . The patronage of St. Athanasius is first mentioned in 1782.

Building

The unusual appearance of the church results from the very high late Gothic choir with a turret and pointed gable helmet, which connects to the east with a low, wide, Romanesque nave with an even lower, east, open porch the width of a nave. The choir was probably intended as the first building phase of a larger pilgrimage church. The two-bay choir with a five-eighth end is supported by two-tiered buttresses . The three lancet windows of the choir are newly glazed. In the north, a baroque sacristy is attached to the choir . The nave has arched windows and one arched portal each in the west and in the south. The fragmentary St. Christopher fresco on the north wall was painted around 1400.

Inside, the nave has a flat wooden ceiling that includes the lower zone of the roof structure. The 17th century coffered ceiling was restored to its original form in 1994. The three-sided, wooden, baroque organ gallery is marked 1687. A retracted, pointed triumphal arch connects the nave with the choir. In the choir, dated 1481, the ribbed vault rests on wall templates with round services and capital rings. There is a sacrament niche on the south wall of the choir . A beveled, basket-shaped portal leads into the sacristy with a burr star vault.

Frescoes

On the north wall of the nave, the remains of two monumental cycles of standing figures, originally one above the other (at different times), each showing Jesus Christ with the twelve apostles , have been preserved. The lower (older) picture cycle is partially covered by the organ gallery. The figures depict a holy bishop and the apostles Thomas , Judas Thaddäus , Jakobus the Younger , Paul , Matthew , Jesus Christ and the apostles Peter and Andreas . This row of apostles is directly related to the fresco by Nikolaus Kentner in the parish church of Kötschach from 1499, but stylistically older. The (later) row of apostles above comes from the late 16th century and repeats the composition of the apostles below.

The head of Christ is shown on the end of the choir in the choir vault, the sun, moon, stars and coats of arms on the round keystones . Tender tendrils are painted in the spandrels of the ribs. Half-figures of the apostles and other saints are depicted in recessed four- and five-pas in the vaulted areas. The fourteen emergency helpers can be seen in the three-pass gusset . The frescoes in the choir were created around 1481 by a Tyrolean workshop close to the Pacherschule and exposed in 1965.

Facility

Georg Andre Freiherr von und zu Kronegg , the Carinthian governor at the time, donated the high altar together with his wife in 1666. The aedicule altar with winding vine columns has a small aedicule attachment in the split segment gable. The central niche contains the sculptures of the saints Athanasius, Georg and Andreas. There are two bishops to the side. The top picture represents the Holy Family .

The wall altar from the end of the 17th century with strong acanthus decoration bears the Gothic statue of St. Nonnosus from the third quarter of the 15th century, as well as four bishops in the wide central niche . The carved group in the medallion represents the Holy Trinity .

On the basket of the pulpit from the first half of the 18th century are the painted representations of the four evangelists and the Good Shepherd . The hand attached to the upper edge of the basket on the right used to hold a crucifix. The crowning of the sound cover is the god's eye in the halo.

Further fittings of the church on the north triumphal arch wall include a Madonna and Child in a crescent moon from the 17th century, console figures of Saints Leonhard and Florian from the 18th century, and a statuette of Saint Athanasius from the 16th century under the gallery. Century, a fragment of a Roman epitaph and a small inventory of original votive pictures .

The original side altars of the nave are now in the parish church of Mariae Birth in Berg im Drautal.
