The Protestant Church of St. Bartholomäi is the village church of the Dornheim community in the Ilm district in Thuringia .

location

As the town grew , the fortified church, originally located on the western edge of the town immediately south of the Wolfsbach, gradually moved into the new center of the town. The south-facing gatehouse with sundial leads to the churchyard, to the picturesque outside staircase of the church, to the cemetery and to the bell tower in the courtyard . The northern village can be reached on foot through a door in the north wall.

history

According to tradition, a previous wooden church from the 9th century stood here. The construction of a new church is noted in the 12th century. The oldest parts are the west tower and the west side of the ship's wall.

In the second half of the 15th century the church got its present appearance. Quarry stones , adapted to the late Gothic style, support the pulled-down roof. The three-winged carved altar dates from 1430. The crucifix dates from the same century . In 1647, the top floor of the tower was rebuilt with the hood of the previous church after the fire in 1631.

The galleries and the altar with pulpit were installed in 1724.

The organ in Schöngleina from 1766 by Justinus Ehrenfried Gerhard provided the basis for a new organ. The church was in danger of collapsing at the time. In 1857 an organ with 18 registers and 998 pipes was installed by Heinrich Louis Witzmann from Stadtilm , which was replaced in 1985 based on a prospectus from the 18th century and using the Gerhard organ.

The nave is a simple rectangular hall structure . The main entrance and the gallery are one above the other. The bell house stalls on the south side were relocated here due to static problems. The epitaph for the Schwarzburg councilor Christoph von Entzenbergk from 1585 is worth seeing .

Bach memorial

On October 17, 1707, Johann Sebastian Bach married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach in this church . Bach wrote the wedding cantata The Lord thinks of us to the pastor Lorenz Stauber (born June 12, 1660 in Arnstadt ; † April 8, 1723 in Dornheim) for his wedding .
