St. Boniface

St. Bonifatius is a Roman Catholic parish church on the eastern edge of the old town of Leeuwarden , the capital of the Dutch province of Friesland . The large neo-Gothic basilica was built from 1882 to 1884 according to plans by Pierre Cuypers . It is considered a major work of the architect.

history

In the last quarter of the 19th century there were first plans to establish a new diocese for the northern provinces of the Netherlands - which were actually only implemented in 1955 with the establishment of the diocese of Groningen . The new church in Leeuwarden happened in view of the expected elevation to the cathedral and also included a bishop's house in neo-Renaissance forms ; this was then converted into a hospital.

The church received the patronage of St. Boniface , who suffered martyrdom in Friesland.

Today the Bonifatiuskirche is the center of the Titus Brandsma parish, to which St. Dominic also belongs.

architecture

St. Boniface is an east-facing brick basilica on a cross plan. The total length is 75 m, the width of the transept 32 m. The 85 m high, richly structured and decorated tower rises above the portal in the west. He wears a distinctive three-part pointed helmet (renewed in 1979 after storm damage). The apse , which is designed as an octagon with its own conical roof, is unusual . The three ornamental gables and the portal facade of the church contain tracery - rose windows .

Furnishing

The main and four side altars are remarkable for their neo-Gothic furnishings. The Anna altar contains a group of Anna selbdritt from the 16th century. The pulpit is baroque .

Organs

St. Bonifatius owns an Adema - Verschueren organ from 1899/1942.

In the crossing there is a one-manual choir organ by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll from 1886. It was originally built as Opus 583 for the Jesuit college Sint Willibrordus in Katwijk and bought in 1945 by the Alkmaar company Pels & Zn. In 1971 she came to Leeuwarden. In 1984 it was bought for St. Boniface and restored by L. Verschueren. It has four registers on a manual with an attached one-octave pedal with the following disposition:
