history

The first church

It is no longer possible to determine exactly when the first church was in Lehmke. However, it is believed that there has been a church since at least 1350, as a chapel was inaugurated in Ostedt, a village belonging to the parish of Lehmke, in 1378 . The old stone church stood until the end of the 19th century and was dedicated to Saint Dionysius , the first bishop of Athens. It was built simply, looked a lot like a farmhouse and had a wooden bell tower next to it.

Demolished in 1896

The church survived even the Thirty Years' War and was spared when almost the entire village burned down in 1673 and 1772. However, the wooden bell tower perished in 1772 as a victim of the flames. In 1896 the church was demolished due to the danger of collapse.

New building from 1896 to 1897

In its place, a new church was built according to plans by the Hildesheim architect Werner Söchtig, which also bears the name of St. Dionys, the St. Dionys Church . It was made of brick in a neo-Gothic style. Its 46 m high tower can be seen from afar. The new building was inaugurated on December 18, 1897.

Furnishing

altar

The altar is a valuable, late Gothic winged altar from around 1450. It was made by the Lüneburg woodcarver Cord Snitker . In 1967/68 it was carefully restored. The altar consists of two rows of shrines on which wooden figures are placed. The top row depicts the apostles surrounding Jesus and Mary. From left to right these are called:

  • Judas Thaddäus: son of James, according to Matt. Lebbäus, holds scriptures and a club
  • James: Son of Zebedee, brother of John, Jesus calls them "Children of Thunder", pilgrim clothes, bag, staff, shell and headgear
  • Jakobus minor: son of Alphaeus with the walker tree
  • Andreas: brother of Simon Peter, inclined cross - St. Andrew's cross
  • Philip: with cross staff
  • Paul: with sword
  • Peter: brother of Andrew, with script and key
  • Simon: "Simon Kanan", with a saw
  • John: brother of James, young, beardless and with a chalice
  • Bartholomäus: with knife
  • Matthew: with sword
  • Thomas: with square measure, patron of the builders

On the bottom row you can see from left to right:

  • the 5 smart women: with friendly faces, crowns and vascular lamps directed upwards
  • Jesus between two angels: Jesus with the sign of the cross
  • female figure with a ram's head in hand: Judaism is to come
  • the 5 foolish women: tearing their hair, sad and painful faces, lamps opening downwards

The backs of the wings are now painted red.

The three large glass windows in the chancel show the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus in bright, bright colors . They were donated in 1925.

The font and the pulpit date from the time of the new building (1898).

The organ was built in 1897 by the organ builder P. Furtwängler & Hammer .

The church tower clock is from 1897 and strikes the hour and half-hour with the big bell . The old big bell is outside the church.
