The St. George Church of Schlettstadt ( Église Saint-Georges de Sélestat is) one of the largest Gothic churches in the sub- Alsace ( Bas-Rhin department ).

description

The church was built from 1230 to 1490 by Strasbourg cathedral builders in the style of French cathedrals on the foundations of a Carolingian predecessor building and incorporating a Romanesque portal.

The building suffered severe external and internal damage from the French Revolution and World War II, which resulted in the loss of numerous sculptures, glass windows and the rood screen.

The church has been restored several times and is currently in a satisfactory condition.

Dimensions

The known dimensions are as follows:

  • External length: 64.85 m
  • Height of the central nave: 20 m
  • Total inside width: 18.70 m
  • Length of the choir: 21.85 m
  • Height of the facade tower: 60 m

Furnishing

The preserved furnishings (early to late medieval stained glass windows in the choir, Gothic wall paintings and a baroque pulpit with Samson as the carrier in the nave, large Rinkenbach organ from 1896 above the entrance) are regionally considered to be of the highest order. The tower clock is the work of Jean-Baptiste Schwilgué . The ringing consists of four bells from the years 1879 and 1924 in the chimes c 1 , e 1 , g 1 and a 1 .

The grave of the humanist Beatus Rhenanus , whose private library can now be admired in the humanist library, is located in St. George's Church .

organ

The organ was built in 1896 by the organ builder Martin Rinckenbach. It replaced an instrument that had been built by Andreas Silbermann in 1768 and sold to the Dominican Church in Colmar in 1896. The organ originally had 43  stops (with Barker machines in the Grand Orgue). In 1952 the arrangement was changed slightly by the organ builder Georg Schwenkedel. The instrument was last restored by Alfred Kern .
