St. George (Bebra)
The Protestant parish church of St. Georg is located in the western district of Bebra of the district town of Sondershausen in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .
location
The parish church is located on a terraced hill and is surrounded by the houses of the historic village center. It towers above the Bebra flowing through the town .
history
A previous building was first mentioned in documents in 1202 as a subsidiary church of St. Petri (Jechaburg) . In 1696 this was so dilapidated that a new building was erected in 1700, possibly including older components (in particular the foundations and choir ).
The church tower, which was in danger of collapsing, was extensively renovated in 1819. The choir tower on the ground floor was adjusted to the width of the nave , and a half-timbered structure was created above this . The nave was extended by one to three axes, while the longitudinal walls were reinforced with supporting pillars. A western vestibule was also built.
In the last third of the 19th century, the interior, which had previously been in its baroque state, was redesigned. In the 1990s, the half-timbered structure was clad with slate and the roof was re-covered.
architecture
It is a rectangular hall church . The roof is designed as a half hip in the west . To the east, above the attic, rises a half-timbered structure, slated to the east and south, on which stands an octagonal tail hood , also clad with slate . The nave has a sandstone base , the walls are made of limestone . The southern facade contains three, the northern two arched windows.
The interior of the church is vaulted by a plastered shallow barrel. There are double galleries on three sides . Large slabs of limestone and sandstone form the floor, possibly older than the church.
Furnishing
On the east wall below the tower there is a wooden pulpit altar in neo -renaissance style from the last third of the 19th century, on which there are reused parts of an originally baroque altar. The octagonal baptismal font with a wooden exterior comes from the same period.
organ
The organ is located on the gallery on the west side. An older instrument, built by Gottfried Knauf in 1854 , was replaced in 1953 by an organ made by the Laube company in Erfurt.
Bells
The ringing consists of three chilled cast iron bells that date back to 1918.
