The St. Georg Church in Bremen Horn-Lehe, Ledaweg 2a, is a Roman Catholic church . It belongs to the Diocese of Osnabrück and is dedicated to St. Dedicated to Georg. The church has 250 seats.

history

At the end of 1953 the new building (church with sacristy) was decided by the Osnabrück Bishop and the Bonifatius Association, but was delayed due to the difficult financial situation. In May 1957 the building was approved by the Osnabrück Vicar General.

The first groundbreaking took place on July 1, 1957; the foundation stone was laid on 18 July 1957. On 27 April 1958, the church was benediziert and on August 18, 1959 consecrated by Bishop Hermann Helmut Wittler.

The architect was Ludger Sunder-Plaßmann from Münster, the construction was carried out by the Heinrich Tönjes company.

The parish was raised to a parish on November 1, 1957 with the districts of Horn, Oberneuland, Borgfeld, Kattrepel, Schwachhausen to Friedhofstraße, Radio Bremen and Kurfürstenallee to Munte. Since 2007 it has formed the parish of St. Catherine of Siena together with the parish of St. Ursula (Bremen Schwachhausen) and the St. Josef-Stift chapel (Bremen Schwachhausen).

In 1966 the church was rebuilt according to the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council : the communion bench was dismantled, the altar was moved and the cross was hung behind the altar.

In 1982 the church was renovated and some changes were made: the connecting passage between the tower and church was demolished; up until then the main portal was located there. The central portal has now been equipped with a vestibule and thus becomes the main portal. In addition, a gallery was built. This changed the location of the organ from the side gallery to the new gallery.

Tower and bells

The tower was planned from the beginning, but for cost reasons the construction work initially concentrated on the church and sacristy. In 1964, the same architect and the same construction company as the church began with the concrete planning for the tower. In May 1965 the tower could be completed. It is 30 meters high and there is a cross on it.

Chimes

The parish of St. Georg has 3 bells in its tower:

The smallest bell weighs 250 kg and bears the inscription: "Jesus, everything shouts to you, you are Lord of life and death."

The middle bell weighs 350 kg and bears the inscription: "Holy Mother Anna, Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, take us all under your special protection"

The third and largest bell weighs 575 kg and bears the inscription: “Praise be to the most holy Trinity and undivided unity, now and for all eternity. 1965 in the 2nd year of the 2nd Vatican Council. "

The tones are a´ / c´´ / d´´ /. The bells were consecrated on August 1, 1965 and rang for the first time on August 15, 1965.

Furnishing

In the altar are the relics of the martyrs Probus († 304) and St. Jucundus († 270).

In the aisle there has been a statue of the Virgin Mary made of limestone from around 1400 since 1983.

In 1983 the interior was changed. The Cologne artist Egino Weinert was commissioned to make the statue of St. Anthony , the twelve Apostle candlesticks with apostle reliefs and the door handles for the vestibule. Most of it was finished by Advent 1983; the door handles with scenes from the First and Second Testament were delivered in 1988.

organ

The organ was built in 1959 by the Oldenburg company H. Kruse. The instrument has 13 registers , which are divided into two manuals and pedal .

More buildings

The rectory next to the church was completed in January 1961, the parish hall in September 1961. The parish hall was demolished in 1994 due to dilapidation and replaced by a new one in September 1995.
