The Roman Catholic Church of Sankt Gereon is in the village of Niederbachem in the municipality of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). She was until 31 December 2009 parish church of the same parish in Niederbachem. Since January 1, 2010, it has been a branch church of the newly founded parish of St. Marien Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district dean in the Archdiocese of Cologne .

Church building and its predecessor buildings

A first wooden chapel came from the second half of the 8th century, which was replaced by a quarry stone building around the year 1000. This was initiated by the canons of St. Gereon from Cologne , who had laid out a Fronhof in the northern area of the Bacheim district. In the district of Bacheim there were two Fronhöfe ( Blankenheimer and St. Gereon Fronhof) with two church buildings, which formed the basis for the later parishes of the Holy Three Kings in Oberbachem and St. Gereon in Niederbachem. In 1142 the chapel was extended by a nave and the tower, which also served as an escape tower for the population. The Archbishop of Cologne formally confirmed in 1301 that the parishes of St. Gereon and Holy Epiphany are independent and thus legally divided Bacheim. Mercenary armies damaged the church in the Thirty Years War . The church was badly damaged again in an earthquake in 1673. However, the tower was preserved.

In 1681 the church was rebuilt in a larger floor plan and a transept was added in the middle of the 19th century. She also gets a new choir.

The church stands as a monument under monument protection and is in point 100 list of monuments in Wachtberg entered.

Bells

The ringing consists of three bells cast in 1952 by the Bochum Association for Cast Steel Manufacture . The motif is the Te Deum . Before the Second World War there were also three bells in the church tower. Two of these bells, made in 1926 by Wilhelm Hausen von Mabilon , Saarburg , were melted down for war purposes.
