The Roman Catholic Church of St. Georg in Fritzdorf , a village in the municipality of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), was built from 1718 to 1724 and consecrated to St. George . It stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

A church in Fritzdorf is mentioned in a document for the first time in 1292 when Robert von Rosowe donated goods in the parish of Fritzdorf and the associated church patronage to the Steinfeld Abbey . The abbey exercised this patronage until its dissolution in 1802 ( secularization ). Little is known about the previous church. A St. Mary's Church is suspected, because the day of the birth of Mary , September 8th, is celebrated as the second patronage festival. Saint George is attested as a church patron only from 1676.

Until December 31, 2009, the church was the Catholic parish church of the parish of St. Georg in the deanery Meckenheim-Rheinbach in the Archdiocese of Cologne . Since 2010 it has been a branch church of the parish of St. Marien Wachtberg . St. Marien Wachtberg has been a parish of the Rhein-Sieg district dean's office since 2017 .

architecture

The Steinfeld Abbey, which was obliged to build, finally had a new church built from 1718 after long disputes with the residents of the village about the manual and tensioning services to be provided . This was consecrated on April 23, 1724, St. George's Day, by the abbot of the Steinfeld monastery. The church is a single nave plastered brick building with a choir and west tower. This was given a tent roof after 1945 and has coupled arched windows on each side .

On the long sides there are four large windows, which are framed in trachyte like the portal . There are stepped buttresses between the windows .

Furnishing

After 1900 the baroque furnishings of the church were replaced by a neo-Gothic one. The old high altar was sold as firewood and in 1906 a new high altar was consecrated . On the high altar there are statues of Moses and Elias as well as St. George and St. Sebastian .

In 1906/07, the lead glass windows that still exist today were installed, showing the Immaculate Conception of Mary, the Holy Family and ornaments.

Holy figures

On the two side altars and on the gallery there are statues of Our Lady , St. Gertrud , St. Joseph , St. Peter and St. Paul . On the side walls there are statues of the following saints: George, John the Baptist , Potentius, Barbara , Katharina , Maria Magdalena and Hermann-Josef .

reliquary

Due to the centuries-old connection to Steinfeld Monastery, the church has a relic of St. Hermann-Josef von Steinfeld. It is kept in a niche in the choir.

Baptismal font

In the choir there is a Romanesque baptismal font made of basalt lava bearing the year 1100.
