Gertraudenkapelle in Bad Belzig

The Evangelical Chapel Sankt Gertrud is a listed building from the second half of the 15th century in Bad Belzig in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district in the state of Brandenburg . The patronage rests with Saint Gertrude von Nivelles .

history

In the 15th century the church built a hospital with an attached chapel. At that time it was still in front of the Brandenburg Gate and thus outside the city of Belzig. It offered protection to the sick and the needy. Likewise, travelers could stay there who could not afford a hotel in the city. After the Reformation , there was initially a profanation and a subsequent structural expansion with a renewed consecration in 1615 under the name Christkirche .

The roof was renovated in 2013.

architecture

The late Gothic building was mainly made of field stones with a rectangular floor plan. The stones are very unevenly layered and, except for the corner stones, not hewn. In 1615 the builders added a polygonal choir extension. Experts suspect that the pointed arched north portal, framed in red brick, was added and the western entrance was built instead. This is also bordered with red brick, albeit in a beehive shape. On the south side of the facade there are two almost equally large, pointed arch-shaped windows, which are also framed with brick. The choir is provided with a light-colored plaster . Above that, in the gable, there are two ogival panels and another centrally located panel, which also takes up this shape. In the western gable there is another beehive-shaped window above the gate and a sound arcade above it . They are bordered with red bricks, which alternate with unevenly layered field stones.

Equipment and use

In the interior there are remains of late Gothic wall paintings from the time the chapel was built. They once showed David and Goliath as well as Holofernes and Judith . The building also has a barrel vault and a gallery on its west side, which also comes from the renovation in around 1615. The originally existing 15 parapet panels with scenes from the life of Jesus Christ are in the 21st century in the Marienkirche .

The building will be used in the 21st century by the Evangelical Church Community of St. Marien - Hoher Fläming Belzig as the cemetery chapel of the Gertrauden Hospital cemetery, which was laid out in 1575.
