Marienkirche in Bad Belzig

The town church of St. Marien is a Romanesque hall church from the second half of the 13th century. It is located northeast of the market square of Bad Belzig in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district in the state of Brandenburg .

history

The exact date of construction is not known. Experts suspect, however, that the builders initially planned a building with a main apse and apses on the cross arms in the first half of the 13th century , but did not realize this. In the 15th century, the nave was probably extended by a south aisle and the church tower was raised by a double-towered structure. Of this, however, only the north tower was built. In 1636 the structure burned down and the tower collapsed. In the years 1657 to 1665 bricklayers repaired the damage and rebuilt essential parts of the northern nave wall. The southern structure of the tower was closed by a pent roof . From 1696 to 1697 they rebuilt the north tower. In 1850 it burned there again, so that the north-east corner of the tower had to be repaired with bricks . In the years 1974 to 1978 the parish renovated the structure and walled up the two arched openings of the tower hall. In the course of these measures, the nave was given a wooden beam ceiling.

architecture

The structure was built from regularly hewn and mostly evenly layered field stones . It consists of a single-nave hall with a retracted, rectangular choir and several lower annexes , which were added to the hall in the form of a transept. A western extension with the church tower protrudes over the width of the ship. At the foot of the tower is a stepped portal, the arch of which was re-framed in brick in the 19th century. A keystone is reminiscent of a sermon by Martin Luther on January 14, 1530. The north tower ends with a baroque , octagonal tower, a double lantern with a curved hood . The windows on the nave are pointed arches. The windows in the choir are designed as lancet windows on the south side . On the north side of the choir, they are set significantly smaller and higher. Experts suspect that a sacristy was added at this point at an earlier time . Instead, there has probably been a sacristy on the south wall of the choir since the beginning of the 14th century. It was initially designed as a single-storey field stone building with added panels in the south gable. Inside it has a barrel vault. The windows, panels and the brick gable are from the construction period. The east gable is decorated with a large, circular screen .

Furnishing

Papenius organ from 1747

The wooden altarpiece was donated by the Fugmanns in 1660. In the main field it shows the Last Supper of Jesus and the crucifixion of Christ and is entwined by columns on which the pictures of the donors were incorporated behind small doors. Next to the predella there is a movable cartilage . The top is crowned by a halo from 1815.

The pulpit was also made of wood in 1659 and 1660 by Chr. Witt from Brandenburg an der Havel . On a rotated support there is a polygonal basket that is decorated with images of Jesus Christ and the four evangelists as well as other cartilage. The fifth is made of sandstone and is dated to around 1600. It comes from the monks' church in Jüterbog . Next to it is a wooden cross from around 1520 and a carved figure of a female saint from around 1430 in the church - on loan from the Grabow community in Mühlenfließ . The 15 panels with scenes from the life of Christ, dated from 1616, were removed from the Gertraudenkapelle in 1959 and installed on the parapet of the southern gallery in 1978.

In the north arm of the cross there is a baroque organ from 1747 by the organ builder Johann Adolarius Papenius , which was brought from Hordorf in Saxony-Anhalt to Bad Belzig in 1974 and inaugurated in 1979 after restoration. The instrument has 20 registers , which are divided between two manuals and a pedal . Together with other historical small organs that are installed in St. Marien, it forms the basis of the Brandenburg Organ Museum . At the southern Kreuzamt there is an epitaph that commemorates Christian Ernst Müßigk, who died in 1724. Another, weathered stone stands on the south wall of the nave and reminds of a woman who died in 1580.
