St. Ignatius (Betzdorf)

Church of St. Ignatius from the East

St. Ignatius is the Catholic parish church of Betzdorf in the Altenkirchen district (Westerwald) . It was built between 1879 and 1882 according to plans by Vincenz Statz as a representative neo-Gothic basilica with a transept . The three-aisled nave opens into a polygonal apse . The tower with a pointed helmet rises on the opposite side of the portal . Inside, the rich original architectural and figure decorations have been completely preserved. The Oberlinger - organ from 1984 has two manuals and pedal with 25 registers .

It wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that Betzdorf had transformed from a small farming village into a railway junction and location of railway companies. The church building became necessary for the rapidly growing population. The church consecration was carried out by the Trier bishop Michael Felix Korum on June 23, 1882. The patronage of St. Ignatius reminds (like St. Aloisius in Herdorf ) of the counter-Reformation work of the Jesuit order in this area.
