St. Jakob in der Au (also St. Jakob in Unterau or St. Jakob in Schint ) is a South Tyrolean high mediaeval church in St. Jakob near Leifers , south of Bozen . The church is located at an elevated valley edge length on a church hill, visible from afar, which is a western branch of the Regglberg .

history

The church is first mentioned in 1237 in the register of the notary Jakob Haas as ecclesia sancti Jacobi in Cinte . In 1275 and 1364 the church was favored as St. Jacob in Shinte and in Shint in wills . The old name St. Jakob in Schint was removed later and was replaced by St. Jakob in der Au or in Unterau (in contrast to Oberau ). St. Jakob used to belong to the parish of Bolzano .

In the district court order of Gries-Bozen from 1487, Mang Kuenn appears as his own district captain "zu sand Jacob" , who also functions as the sovereign tax collector .

architecture

The walls of the nave date back to Roman times, as is the arched slit window on the south side and the untreated stone placed walled tower with pointed pyramid and Biforien - or triforium . The nave was re-covered with a star-ribbed net vault in 1542 . Remnants of frescoes from the end of the 14th century have been preserved above the vault of the nave, which are assigned to the Bolzano painting school. The triumphal arch is decorated with wall paintings from 1484. The polygonal final choir was built in 1480. Conversions and extensions from the early 20th century by Ferdinand Mungenast and Hans Treffen were restored in 1970/71.

The church was listed as a historical monument in 1978 .

archive

From the years 1540 to 1803, 81 account books of St. Jakob in der Au at the Bolzano city archive have survived (Hss. 858–939), which were kept by the respective church provosts .
