The single-nave church facing east was probably built around the end of the late Romanesque period in the first half of the 13th century. Closely connected with the emerging place name Brochenzell , which is derived from broken cell , the church is referred to as ruinosum , i.e. a ruin, in a Constance Investiture Protocol of 1466 .

The Lords of Humpis , who acquired the Brochenzell dominion and built the neighboring castle, also had the church structurally altered and finally gave it a Gothic appearance in 1624. In 1734 the church building was redesigned in Baroque style .

In the 1970s a fundamental renovation followed, which was necessary due to the strong population growth. So an annex was built in the south of the old nave, which has since served as a new nave. The old nave, on the other hand, was converted into a choir room, while the old choir room with the rosary altar was used as a baptistery.

Rosary altar

The most important work of art in the church is the rosary altar acquired in 1817. This originally came from the Dominican monastery in Löwental and was created by Hans Georg Winkel in Bregenz in 1683/84. The altarpiece is by J. Feuchtmayr (around 1730).

Holy Cross Chapel

The Holy Cross Chapel, built in 1622 by local pastor Urban Lidel, is in the immediate vicinity of the parish church. It was expanded in the 18th century with the construction of a vestibule and now serves as a memorial for those who fell in the two world wars.

Way of St. James

Brochenzell is located on the Upper Swabian Way of St. James . The route from Ravensburg splits here, runs east via Tettnang and Kressbronn on Lake Constance to Nonnenhorn and west via Markdorf and Meersburg to Konstanz . The destination of all the Camino de Santiago is the grave of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain .
