St. Johann Baptist in Johanneskirchen

St. Johann Baptist is a church building in Munich that is consecrated to St. John the Baptist . It is located in the Johanneskirchen district in the Bogenhausen district and is a subsidiary church of the parish of St. Thomas Apostel in Oberföhring .

history

In the year 815 a church consecrated to John the Baptist is mentioned for the first time in a document between the bishopric of Freising and the deacon Huuezzi as "ecclesia sancti Johannis baptiste in loco Feringas". That was the first parish church in the original parish of Föhring. The current church in Romanesque style dates from the 13th century. It was built as a fortified church surrounded by a curtain wall and also served as a fortification and refuge.

description

The church consists of a nave that is oriented to the west and to which a massive square tower with a gable roof and a wall thickness of 180 cm is placed at the base on the east side . The church is surrounded by a cemetery in an oval wall ring, which, however, has only been half the height of the medieval wall since it was partially demolished in the 17th century.

During a renovation of the church in 1939, remains of frescoes from the 14th century with depictions of the apostles were discovered.
