Nave and tower of St. Johann Baptista

The Roman Catholic village church of Sankt Johann Baptista was built in the 15th century. The church, surrounded by farms, is located on Kirchenweg in the old town center of Teising .

history

Teising was mentioned in a document as early as 710 as one of the oldest places in the region. By Teising led one of Töging produces the Inn crossing Roman road . It is therefore assumed that there was already a religious site in Teising in pre-Christian times. Parts of the nave walls are Romanesque remains of the first Christian church in Teising. During this time Teising was a separate parish and baptistery for the entire region.

In the 15th century the originally Romanesque church was replaced by the current Gothic structure. Like many others, the Teisinger Church was also to be demolished during the secularization of Bavaria . The efforts of the Teisingen population prevented this. During the Second World War, all church bells, with the exception of the smallest, were confiscated and melted down by the military for weapons production. The smallest bell is therefore the oldest, while the larger ones had to be purchased again after the World War with donations from the population.

In 1970 the interior was redesigned and extensively restored in the years 2008–2009 with a lot of personal contribution from the population.

building

The nave has three bays, followed by the east-facing, non-retracted single- bay choir with a five-eighth end. In the west is the tower, in the south the sacristy . The vestibule, also south of the nave, was added in the 19th century.

Furnishing

During the interior renovation in 2008, the central aisle was restored. Since October 2013 the church has had a high altar again, which was previously in the Marienfeld monastery.

The vault keystones still show some original fresco paintings , which were discovered and restored during the interior renovation. Depicted are St. Elisabeth of Thuringia with the basket of roses, St. Barbara with the tower, St. Catherine with wheel and sword, St. Peter with the key and the head of St. John the Baptist .

meaning

The previous building was the baptistery for the entire area. This is not only indicated by the patronage of John the Baptist. The motifs of the original painting also take up the baptism motif. Today St. Johannes in Teising is a branch church of the parish Burgkirchen am Wald . Every Saturday there is an evening service here.
