The Protestant village church of St. Johannes is located in the Schönewerda district of the town and rural community of Roßleben-Wiehe in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish of Roßleben in the parish of Eisleben-Sömmerda of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

history

The church is the oldest building in the village cultural monument . A previous Gothic building from the 13th and 14th centuries was the victim of a major fire in November 1753, which destroyed the entire village. The construction of today's church began after seven years. The nave and choir with late baroque elements were completed after four years. The new church tower with simple classical elements was built between 1806 and 1809.

In the following times, the house of God was neglected. The bells were melted down for war purposes; one of them was found again after 1945 in Hamburg in the bell cemetery. The church continued to be neglected, and donations were hardly paid attention to.

In 1991, the repair of the roofs began . In 2001 the Association for the Preservation of the Church intervened. After the renovation work has been completed, the nave shines, but further damage to the masonry of the tower has to be repaired and financed, because the tower is inclined a little.
