St. Josef in Stadtkyll

The Church of St. Josef is the Roman Catholic parish church of the local community Stadtkyll in the Vulkaneifel district ( Rhineland-Palatinate ).

history

The parish of Stadtkyll was first mentioned in a document in 1100. A church was only mentioned in 1308. This church was replaced by a new church around 1505, which was elevated to a parish church in 1508. Until then, the parish church was in Niederkyll . This church was destroyed by a city fire in 1632 and rebuilt in 1634. In 1814 the church fell victim to the flames and was completely destroyed. In the years 1823 and 1824 a new church was built according to plans by the Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the architectural style of classicism . However, this church was also badly damaged by a fire in 1854 and was rebuilt according to the original building plans.

In the interior of the church there is a high altar from the second half of the 18th century. It originally comes from the Walholzkirche between Hunolstein and Weiperath and came to Stadtkyll between 1966 and 1967. The altar cross was blessed by John Paul II in a private audience in 1996 . There are also some figures of saints in the worship room. The church windows also show saints. A total of six paintings depicting the joyous rosary and the Adoration of the Magi were hung between the windows . They come from the church of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and came to Stadtkyll in the 1990s.
