The St. Kamillus Church is a Catholic church in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg , which was inaugurated in 1932 and, together with neighboring buildings, is a listed building. The St. Kamillus Church is located in Berlin south of the Charlottenburg Palace Park at Klausenerplatz 12/13 and is the seat of the parish of the same name.

history

The congregation was founded on the initiative of Bernhard Lichtenberg after the Herz Jesu Church at which he was pastor became too small. Even before it was founded, there was a service on Christmas Day 1922 in the auditorium of the Nehring primary school for the later Sankt Kamillus parish. First, a converted former riding arena of the Guards cuirassiers was inaugurated on March 25, 1923 as a chapel in honor of the order founder Camillus von Lellis (1550-1614). In the meantime, a parsonage , a monastery and a community hall have been set up in two houses acquired by the community at the former Friedrich-Karl-Platz 7 and 8.

According to plans by the architect Hermann Albert Mohr, after the demolition of the two houses at Friedrich-Karl-Platz 7 and 8, the Sankt-Kamillus-Kirche was built there, a combination of a church , old people's home , community halls, kindergarten , monastery and pastor's office in 1931 and 1932 Erected as a four-wing building and finally inaugurated on June 26, 1932. The care in the kindergarten and old people's home was ensured by Sisters of Our Lady until 1974 , after which lay people took over this work. In 1987 the parish and sick pastoral care was taken over by Polish Fathers of the Camillian Order .

Buildings and towers

The naves cover the first three floors of the building. Above that, clearly separated from the outside, the rooms for the retirement home are arranged.

On two corners of the building facing the square, square and symmetrically designed bell towers rise. They have vertical, uncovered sound openings and are closed off with a flat roof. A large metal cross each forms the end of the towers.

The entire church ensemble has been designed to be handicapped accessible .

activity

Camillian Order

Since the founding of the community, the Camillian Order has been responsible for parish and pastoral care, a kindergarten and a home for the elderly.

kindergarten

Since the founding of the Sankt-Kamillus-Kirche there has also been a day-care center based on five fixed principles:

  1. Life and learning in the day care center are based on the current interests of the child. But the future is also taken into account and the skills the child needs to cope with it.
  2. Daycare work is open. It is based on the situation of the children and of course includes the parents.
  3. Educators see themselves as stimulators. They take care of a prepared environment and a well-structured daily routine.
  4. Offers for the children are planned, prepared and reflected upon.
  5. The work of the day care center is controllable and verifiable.

In the day-care center, a total of 50 children between the ages of 1 and 6 are cared for in two groups of five educators (as of 2010). The premises comprise two floors, each with a common room and appropriate sanitary facilities.

Retirement home

The retirement home is operated with a total of 40 single rooms for both denominational and non-denominational women and men (as of December 2011). There are also common rooms and common rooms. House parties and joint excursions enrich life in this facility.
