The parish church of St. Konrad is a Catholic church in Koblenz . The church, built between 1956 and 1964, is the second parish church in the Metternich district . It bears the patronage of St. Conrad of Parzham .

history

In the Middle Ages, the Rohrerhof was located in the area of today's parish church of St. Konrad, which belonged to the other parish church of St. John Beheading in Metternich. A branch monastery of the Cistercian Abbey of Himmerod with a public chapel stood here . In 1928 the parish of St. Johannes decided to build another church on the Rohrerhof. In 1930 a hall was bought which was converted into an emergency church . However, this was completely destroyed by an air mine during the air raids on Koblenz in December 1944 .

A new church was built from 1956 to 1964 according to plans by the architect H. Heinrichs from Koblenz-Metternich. The foundation stone was laid on November 4, 1956. The church received its artistic design in 1960. After the church was completed, St. Konrad was raised to an independent parish in 1961 . The church tower was only built in 1964 using the slipform process .

Construction and equipment

The steel frame building has a large hall with a wide-span ceiling. The individual compartments are lined with bricks. The choir is rectangular, raised a few steps and in front of the great hall. Ribbons of windows on both sides of the hall give the room the light it needs. The window above the gallery shows the church patron Konrad von Parzham based on a design by A. Kohlhaas. The altarpiece of the Holy Trinity , the Stations of the Cross and the wall design between the confessionals are mosaic pictures by the artist Jakob Schwarzkopf (1926–2001).

The free-standing church tower measures 34 m high.

Parish community

St. Konrad is part of the " Koblenz (Metternich) parish community ", which also includes St. Johannes Beheading in Metternich , St. Servatius in Güls and St. Mauritius in Rübenach .
