Sankt Mariä Himmelfahrt is the Catholic parish church in Schwedt / Oder , Uckermark district . It was built between 1895 and 1898 based on plans by Max Hasak and is now a listed building.

A Catholic parish was only reestablished in Schwedt in 1853 after the Reformation . It consisted of only a few local families and the Catholic garrison members . A garden bar was purchased on the edge of the old town and its dance hall was converted into a church. The construction of today's representative church in the same place is largely thanks to the initiative and financial support of the Schwedt city councilor and honorary citizen Clemens Ortmeyer .

Max Hasak designed the church in the neo-Gothic style with forms of the north German brick Gothic . The nave is a high, single-nave, vaulted hall only two bays in length. This is followed by a transept with decorative gables on both sides and window rosettes (designed by the glass artist Thomas Kuzio in 2013 ) and the chancel with a polygonal back wall. The opposite end is formed by the towering, transversely rectangular tower bar, which carries a slim roof turret.

The interior was originally richly decorated with neo-Gothic figures and wall paintings. A bomb hit on April 18, 1945 and the redesign between 1969 and 1971 resulted in a rather sober room centered on the new celebration altar , which since the 1980s had been felt to be aesthetically and liturgically inadequate. During the renovation and renovation work from 1997 to 1999, the original spatial effect was tied in with the restoration of the chancel.

Some of the furnishings are older than the church: the central Crucifixus (1580), a Pietà (14th century) and an Anna selbdritt (1490). The stained glass windows were made in 1964. Hans Schindler's Way of the Cross was given to the church in 1980, and the Sauer company organ in 1988.

The former Angermünde parish with the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has been part of the Catholic parish of Schwedt since 2003 .
