biography

Thomas Kuzio was born in Altentreptow in Mecklenburg in 1959. With the Abitur he made a professional qualification as a construction worker. After an internship as a glass painter, Kuzio studied artistic glass design with Rüdiger Reinel at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in Halle from 1981 to 1989 ( diploma ). Since 1989 he has lived and worked in Sommersdorf am Kummerower See in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

When designing glass windows, Thomas Kuzio works in addition to the classic material use of hand-blown real antique glass and the lead technique, above all with a distinctive glass painting technique. Pointillism , drip painting and the expressive use of color in geometric structures characterize the style of his glass work and panel paintings . Kuzio's glass sculptures maintain a great deal of autonomy in relation to the surrounding architecture.

The cycle from 1996 for the secular neo-Romanesque church of St. Josef in Neubrandenburg (Multicultural Center Latücht ) is considered a key work in Kuzio's visual language. The colored internal structure and the technical craftsmanship make the nine arched windows the main decoration of the otherwise simple building.

The 2002 resulting window cycle of the chancel and choir of the Evangelical Church of St. Bartholomew in Ribnitz-Damgarten shows Kuzios mature personal style in a sophisticated architectural context. Here, for the first time, iconographic references to the furnishings in the sanctuary are made.

For the glazing of the choir of the Evangelical Reformed cathedral and town church St. Jakob in Köthen , Kuzio added a remnant of figural glass painting from the 15th century with a strictly constructivist lead crack in the design.

The artist's most important work to date in 2012 is the furnishing of the crypt and baptistery of the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral in Naumburg with four windows. In May 2017 it was announced that Kuzio had received the order for the artistic design of the last window in the main nave of the Ulm Minster , which had been provided with emergency glazing since the Second World War . The inauguration of the 13-meter-high Ulm Kuzio window took place on Pentecost Sunday in May 2018.

In addition to his architecture-related work with glass, Kuzio also creates paintings, drawings and prints .
