The Catholic parish church of St. Marien is a characteristic church building in Freudenberg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the pastoral association Hüttental Freudenberg in the Archdiocese of Paderborn . The building is the first consistent round church in the archbishopric, the semicircular arrangement of the stalls are also clear in the elevation.

History and architecture

Tower cylinder with angel of judgment

The previous church was built from 1874 to 1875 under the direction of Gerhard August Fischer in neo-Gothic forms. It became too small and dilapidated. The little valued architecture was to be replaced by a contemporary design. In addition, a church designed according to the new liturgical order with the altar as the formal center should be created. The building plot for the new building is located below a slope and is surrounded by the cemetery and park-like green spaces; The roof can be seen from the cemetery above the building. The building by the architect Aloys Sonntag is based on ideas from Gottfried Böhm .

The center of the church building, developed from a circular shape, is the altar zone, which is slightly raised and surrounded in a semicircle by the blocks of chairs. Around the stalls, a corridor leads, on the right of the page, the former baptistery and on the left side, a side chapel is opened. The sanctuary is closed by a high, rounded front wall, behind which the sacristy is housed. The lighted dome above the altar stands out from the outside and shows the location of the altar.

A separate portal building with a vestibule contains the two portals, the vestibule emerges from the circular shape like the organ gallery. The portal structure is made entirely of honeycomb concrete. A flat canopy rests on two supports and covers the wide entrance. In the area of the walkway, the windowless walls are structured by supports. The upper storey is glazed. The Marienkapelle was built on the south side in 1980.

The tower cylinder from 1971 stands freely above a round floor plan, it is closed with a dome, which comes into effect on all sides and crowned by a three-meter-high court angel with three wings blowing a trumpet . It was created by the sculptor J. Joest from Frankfurt.

Furnishing

  • The block-like altar forms the center of the church. It was made from Greek crystalline by the sculptor J. Baron. The altar is decorated with an eagle, a lion and a bull, a being with a human face and some eyes and wings. Relics of Liborius are kept in the reliquary on the front.
  • Various bronze works, such as a Madonna , the Easter candlestick, and the ambo also come from the Baron's workshop.
  • The tabernacle column is also a work by the sculptor Baron.
  • The room-defining glass paintings in the high arcades are works by Georg Meistermann . The artist shows an interlocking and condensed composition that should be interpreted continuously over intervals.
  • The Stations of the Cross were made in the Walter Mellmann workshop, and what is striking about all stations is that they protrude over the edges. They all show the formal element of the diagonals and are considered artistically meaningful.

organ

The organ on the gallery was built in 1967 by the organ builder Anton Feith (Paderborn). The slider chests -instrument has 25 registers (1750 pipes) on two manuals and pedal . The playing and stop actions are electric.
