St. Marien is the Roman Catholic Church of the formerly independent political community of Holthausen . It is the only church in Laer-Holthausen. Today it belongs to the municipality of Laer in the Steinfurt district in North Rhine-Westphalia. The (former) parish includes the farming communities Esking and Temming that up in 1969 along with other farming communities community Beerlage formed what today Billerbeck in Coesfeld belongs. Since the merger with St. Bartholomäus (Laer) to the parish of St. It is a branch church of the Ewaldi brothers. The parish church is in Laer.

Building history and description

The parish of Holthausen was first mentioned in a document in 1265. The choir is still preserved from the uniform construction of the church from 1448. This year is noted on a lintel in the sacristy. The outer wall of the choir is supported by buttresses. The church from 1448 was a five-axis / -jochiger (?) Hall with a tower and a 5/8 choir closure. In 1747 the tower collapsed and was rebuilt in 1751, with the west entrance missing. After a fire in 1771, the nave was rebuilt in a widened form with a south main entrance and the choir that had now been retracted was retained. The uniform mirrored ceiling in the choir and nave with a circumferential stucco profile, which, however, was left out in the choir, probably dates from this time. Above the south entrance of the three-axis hall building (at the time) is a chronogram that shows the year of completion in encrypted form.

Adding the capital letters as Roman numerals results in 1805, subtracting the mentioned “eighteen years”, and 1787 as the year of completion.

In 1887 a new sacristy was built on the north side of the choir and the church interior was renovated, which in 1910 was extended by two axes to the west. The main entrance was also relocated to this point. Since then, a neo-Gothic façade made of Baumberger sandstone has formed the end, the tower (1912) stands north of this latest extension. In 1962 the sacristy was finally rebuilt. The church of St. Marien is thus today a five-axis church with Gothic pointed arched windows without tracery in the chancel end, a west window with tracery and in the nave window with segmented arches as the upper end. Except for the facade and the tower, the building is plastered in light gray; the reveals of the windows and the south entrance (also Baumberger sandstone) are however left visible. Tower and west facade, the latter in the gable area, are divided by corner pilasters and pointed arch friezes.

Furnishing

The organ stage was reused during the expansion and forms the only remaining larger part of the older equipment, which is otherwise uniformly neo-Gothic. In the middle of the simple wooden parapet, the Jesus monogram "IHS" is depicted in a halo. The side altars, the canteens of which have been greatly reduced, are made of neo-Gothic sandstone blocks attached to the wall. The northern one houses a statue of Joseph and the southern one a group of figures from Joachim , Anna and Maria as children , including a colored Pietà in a niche. The old high altar made of sandstone has served as a celebration altar since 1969, whereby an ambo was formed from its structure and the tabernacle including expositorium was attached as a sacrament house in a pointed arch niche on the south wall of the choir. The pulpit and choir stalls were removed as early as 1956. In a side niche opposite the south entrance there is a confessional, its wooden carving is neo-Gothic. In the tower chapel there is still a stone grave Christ from around 1650, a warrior memorial and a window with the "Baptism of the Lord". On the inside of the west facade there is a baroque crucifixion relief and on its outside next to the main entrance there is also a baroque relief with a representation of Lazarus. Delicately worked, fully sculptured stone figures of the four evangelists adorn the south aisle wall. The Way of the Cross is made of bronze and is from 1969. A brass chandelier in the style of a Flemish crown from 1840 is in the center of the church. The baptismal font is in the choir apse, there are also figures from the neo-Gothic high altar: Agnes of Rome, John and two others. There are also holders for the banners of church groups and the shooting club. The five windows of the choir show the secrets of the joyful rosary and were donated in 1917 on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the pastor. The triumphal cross above the celebration altar is modern.

The organ has a neo-Gothic prospect.

Others

The crib of the community comes from Ortisei in Val Gardena and, like the glazing of the choir, was also donated in 1917 for the golden jubilee of the pastor. Unusual for a crib in Westphalia, but typical for the region of origin, is the depiction of additional companion animals of the Three Kings; with the normally singular camel (in this case standing for Asia) there is also an elephant and a horse (symbolizing Africa and Europe). The crib stables come from the same time.
