history

Oppau was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 808 . The same document also mentions the Martinspatrozinum . This early mention and the patron St. Martin suggest that the Oppauer Church is the oldest church in Ludwigshafen. In 888 the East Franconian King Arnulf gave the church to his faithful Reginbert, who in turn later donated it to Lorsch Abbey . Presumably in the 12th century the patronage came to the Worms cathedral provost, who incorporated the church into the Worms cathedral chapter in 1234 . In 1556, the Palatinate Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation . After that, the church was reformed almost entirely and was also assigned to the Reformed when the Palatinate church was divided in 1705.

Between 1771 and 1774 the Catholics then built a small baroque church in Oppau. In 1805 a parish was set up again in Oppau. As a tradition, the patron saint was St. Martin. The church was destroyed in 1921 by the explosion of the Oppau nitrogen works . The larger new building in the neo-baroque style included the front and the foundations of the old church according to plans by Albert Boßlet and Josef Kuld . It was consecrated on November 11, 1923 by the Speyer Bishop Ludwig Sebastian . During the Second World War , this church was also destroyed after an air raid in 1943. Between 1953 and 1954 the new, much larger St. Martin Church was built. The architect was again Albert Boßlet. The parish of St. Martin is today with Mary Queen ( Ludwigshafen-Edigheim ) and St. Albert ( Ludwigshafen-Pfingstweide ) a parish community .

description

The St. Martin Church is in the center of Oppau. The three-aisled hall church is a functional, plastered building. The 38 meter high church tower integrated parts of the previous building and is now placed in the form of a campanile on the right flank. The St. Martin mosaic on the front was created by the sculptor Hans König .

Wilhelm Braun designed the windows in the choir . They show scenes from the life of St. Martin. The windows in the nave were designed by the architect Albert Boßlet . The fittings include a St. Martin figure from around 1500. The organ was built in 1958 by Klais . The instrument has 38 registers . The ringing consists of five bells with the strike tone sequence c 1 –es 1 –g 1 –b 1 –c 2 , which come from the Bochumer Verein and the Schilling foundry .
