The church

The Protestant village church of St. Martin is in the Oberwillingen district of the town of Stadtilm in the Ilm district in Thuringia .

This village church is a massive stone building that was erected in the 10th century and remodeled in the 13th century. It is one of the oldest churches in the region. The Reformation was introduced here in 1533 .

According to the chronicle , the big bell was purchased in 1667 . In 1752 the church tower was restored. In 1792 the tower button was put on. The church roof was covered in 1836 and the unusable organ was repaired by an organ builder from Schmiedefeld in 1857 . In 1875 the church tower received its first lightning rod . In 1814 the organ was exchanged. In 1917 the prospect pipes and later the bells were melted down during the war .

Against the will of the pastor , citizens hoisted the white flag when the Americans marched in on April 11, 1944, so that damage was averted.

In the period that followed, there were no activities to maintain the church. Today only the church tower and the choir east of the tower can be used. The nave has been a roofless ruin since 1980 . The baroque spire was replaced by a simple roof.
