St Martin Tower (initially known as City West Tower and West Tower ) is a high-rise building in Frankfurt am Main that was completed in 2015 .
Surname
Namesake of the tower is Martin of Tours (* around 316 / 317 , † 397 ), also known as St. Martin. The third Bishop of Tours is one of the most famous saints of the Catholic Church.
location
The building plot is located in City West , a residential and business district in the Bockenheim district , at 116 Theodor-Heuss-Allee. Theodor-Heuss-Allee serves as an important link between the 648 federal motorway with Messe Frankfurt and downtown Frankfurt . There are already several high-rise buildings on its north side; the direct neighbors of the St Martin Tower are the Radisson Blu Hotel Frankfurt and the American Express high-rise .
Planning history
Since 1999 there has been a development plan for the property that allows a height of 70 meters. In 2001 Ingenhoven Architects presented a skyscraper with the name City West Tower, but for years the property remained fallow and was used as a parking lot. In 2008, the project developer Arthur Wiener and Strabag Real Estate, a subsidiary of Strabag SE , bought the property and announced that the high-rise, now known as West Tower for short, would be built speculatively without pre-letting. In February 2009, a new design for a 70 meter high building, designed by the architects msm meyer schmitz-morkramer, was presented. Another building is to be built on the edge of the block, which will be connected to the high-rise and will be called the West Wing. In autumn 2009, the realization was postponed again due to a lack of potential tenants. In 2011 Arthur Wiener withdrew from the project and Hansa AG became the new developer. In October 2012, Georg von Opel GmbH, as the owner of Hansa AG , announced that construction would start again for spring 2013 and the project was renamed again: St Martin Tower and St Martin Wing for the outbuilding. The new plans were presented at the Expo Real trade fair .
Building history
Construction work on the property began in February 2013 after the first partial building permit had been granted. The laying of the foundation stone was celebrated on April 19 . On May 2, a ten hundredweight bomb from the Second World War was found on the property, as a result of which the surrounding area had to be evacuated for defusing on May 5. Another bomb of the same type was discovered on May 16, and again on May 22. The defuses were successful, but around 300 residents and guests of the Radisson Blu Hotel each had to be evacuated, and the 648 motorway and adjacent roads had to be closed for several hours. The St Martin Tower was opened on July 8, 2015 in the presence of Georg von Opel and Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann .
