The parish church Sankt Martinus in Haren , also called Emsland-Dom , was built by Ludwig Becker from 1908 to 1911 and consecrated on September 14, 1911. It is considered a symbol of the city.

Church building

Interior with dome

The church stands on the site of a church built in the Middle Ages , which was replaced by a neo-Romanesque church in 1853/1854 . The bell tower with three bells of this church, cast in 1510, 1650 and 1921, and the side walls adapted to the baroque style of the new building have been preserved.

The original three-aisled nave of the old church was converted into a 15 meter wide hall. The interior is covered by a 15 meter high barrel vault , the same applies to the transept and high choir. The dome reaches a height of 27 meters. The inner length of the church (excluding the tower) is 58.75 meters. The transept is 29.95 meters wide and 15.05 meters long. The mighty dome is 58 meters high and tapers towards the top to form two lanterns. There are around 800 seats available in the interior.

The main donors of the church were textile entrepreneurs Henri and Stefan Esders . If they should experience their parents' golden wedding anniversary, they promised to donate a large sum to charitable causes. After the parents were actually able to celebrate their golden wedding in Haren, the brothers donated a total of 110,000 marks - almost half of the construction costs. In their honor there is an image of the stoning of St. Stephen and an image of St. Henry on the main windows in both aisles.

In 2011, the parish of St. Martinus Haren (Ems) celebrated the centenary festival. Half a week of festivities took place from September 14th to 18th, 2011. On the occasion of this festival, the artist Paul Brandenburg created a cover for the font from around 1200.
