St. Matthias (Riegelsberg)
The St. Matthias Church is a Roman Catholic parish church of the Trier diocese in Riegelsberg, Saarland .
history
Originally, the Catholics of the former village of Pflugscheid-Hixberg (part of today's Riegelsberg) belonged to the parish of St. Josef St. Josef Riegelsberg . The first barrack church on site was set up in 1950. The parish church on Hixberger Straße was built in 1955 and 1956 according to the plans of the architect AJ Peter from Landau and redesigned in 1965 according to the ideas of the Second Vatican Council.
With effect from September 1, 2011, the parish of St. Matthias was merged with the two parishes of St. Josef in Riegelsberg and Herz Jesu in Köllerbach to form the Riegelsberg-Köllerbach parish community.
Building description
Exterior
The parish church of St. Matthias is visible from afar due to its exposed location on a mountain. This is especially true for the striking brick church tower . The church building itself is designed quite simply from the outside and has a large gable front on both long sides, which is pierced by many vertical window strips. On the west side there is a smaller gable-shaped extension, which contains the entrance area and the organ gallery.
Interior
The interior of the parish church is architecturally unique in this form. Two mighty red-painted concrete pillars start below the organ gallery, then strive at about a 45 ° angle to the highest point of the church and then curve steeply down to flank the choir on the left and right. Red cross struts and the white painted church ceiling also rest on these. These arches, which span the entire room, create the impression of a unity of the whole. The space is limited by large stained glass window facades on both sides.
organ
The organ on the west gallery was built in 1966 by the Lorraine company Haerpfer and has 23 registers on two manuals and a pedal . The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electrical. The arrangement of the organ is as follows:
